Tangalle

Tangalle is famous for its beautiful and virtually untouched coastline which is favored by those seeking a romantic beach getaway or perfect honeymoon destination. And one of southern Sri Lanka’s most stunning stretches of coastline is a gem often overlooked by international tourists. With its pristine beaches stretching far beyond the town, backed by fields of swaying palm trees, the area offers a serene escape for those seeking tranquility away from the bustling tourist hotspots. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture, enjoy fresh seafood at charming beachside shacks, and watch the sunset paint the sky in vibrant hues.

Tangalle’s history is as deep as the ocean it rests beside. It was an important anchorage for the Dutch during their reign in Sri Lanka, primarily used for cinnamon trading. Its strategic position along maritime trade routes made Tangalle a melting pot of cultures and influences. However, the best time to visit Tangalle is during the North and East dry season, which is from April to September to make the most of your visit to the beautiful beaches. There are collection of luxurious hotels, guesthouse and villas – scattered along the coves and shores that line the oceanfront.

Travelers will find some of the best beaches on the island, like Goyambokka Beach, where you could lie out for hours under the gently swaying palms. Silent Beach is a semi-private beach located in front of the luxurious Amanwella resort in Tangalle. It’s truly seclusion redefined. If you want to spend time very peacefully and alone in space, this is a perfect spot to visit.

Rekawa Beach

In addition, Rekawa Beach is the most beautiful hidden beach in Sri Lanka. It’s located 8 km from Tangalle beach, and travelers can easily reach it there. From Tangalle town, you should pass through Netolpitiya Junction and reach this coastal strip through the middle of that village. Due to its location, this beach is off the usual tourist path. It is an ideal location for those seeking privacy since you can easily find a stretch of beach away from crowds to enjoy on your own

Rekawa Beach is roughly a 4-kilometer-long, pristine beach with sand. It is located near Tangalle. Rekawa Beach is one of the most eastern beaches you can visit on the southern shoreline of Sri Lanka. (Further east, there are only marshlands and mangrove forests.)

Undoubtedly, travelers will spend marvelous time on the beach. Watching the waves and having the beach almost to yourself is a unique experience. Because of the big waves, most parts of it are not the best for swimming or surfing. However, there is a small natural rock pool where you can cool down and take a dip. One of the best things to do around Rekawa is Turtle Watch. There are ongoing conservation projects to protect the nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings. They offer to take visitors to the beach every night to show the turtles laying their eggs and to release the hatchlings to the ocean.

There are wide stretches of beaches offering a huge variety of activities like sunbathing, surfing, windsurfing, nature tours, parks, sightseeing, and boat tours. But if you really want to do something different, something that’s unique to Tangalle, then Rekawa Lagoon kayaking is the activity for you. Rekawa Lagoon is a coastal waterbody that is separated from the sea by a tiny strip of beach. The lagoon possesses a rich biodiversity. It is home to a wide variety of marine life, both flora and fauna. This beautiful stretch of inland water is surrounded by lush mangroves teeming with life of its own. There is no question that you will be captivated by the sheer ambience of this location alone. Travelers can enjoy the tranquility of the calm waters as the coastal breeze eases your mind as you float among the mangroves.

Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is one of the places you should visit; close to 150 different bird species have been recorded, including some rare and threatened bird species. You can go on a safari using paddle boards and join bird photography tours.
