Surrounded by misty mountains, rolling tea plantations, and lush greenery, the town provides a picturesque setting that feels almost magical. The town is rich in history and legend, most notably tied to the tales of King Ravana from the epic Ramayana. According to local folklore, several nearby caves and waterfalls—such as Ravana Ella Falls and Ravana Cave—are believed to have played a role in this ancient story, adding a mystical layer to Ella’s charm. For those who crave adventure, Ella is a paradise for outdoor activities. Hiking enthusiasts can trek to Ella Rock for panoramic views or climb Little Adam’s Peak, a relatively easier hike that still rewards with stunning vistas. The Nine Arches Bridge, an architectural marvel from the colonial era, is another iconic site, where visitors can witness trains passing through the lush jungle backdrop—perfect for photography lovers.

In addition to its natural and cultural wonders, Ella’s town center is warm and welcoming. You’ll find vibrant street markets, cozy cafés, and locally run restaurants where you can taste authentic Sri Lankan cuisine and interact with friendly locals. This unique blend of adventure, legend, and laid-back charm makes Ella a must-visit destination in Sri Lanka’s hill country.

Ella Rock (Ravana Rock)

Ella Rock is one of the most popular and rewarding hiking destinations in Sri Lanka, located near the laid-back hill town of Ella in the Badulla District. Towering at approximately 1,041 meters (3,415 feet) above sea level, the summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, tea plantations, and the famous Little Adam’s Peak in the distance. The trek to Ella Rock is a moderately challenging adventure that typically takes about 2 to 3 hours each way, passing through railway tracks, eucalyptus forests, and steep rocky paths. While the trail isn’t always clearly marked, the journey is as rewarding as the destination, with changing scenery, birdsong, and cool mountain breezes accompanying hikers along the way. At the top, the sweeping views and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect spot to relax, take photographs, or simply soak in the natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Ella Rock is a must-do for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking an unforgettable outdoor experience in the central highlands.

Ravana Cave

The Ravana Cave is located 2 kilometers outside of Ella town and lies 1370 meters above sea level. It is one of the most important tourists’ attractions with historical value in Ella. Ravana Cave is a fascinating historical and mythical site. Steeped in legend, the cave is believed to be one of the hideouts used by King Ravana, the demon king from the Indian epic Ramayana. The history of the Ravana cave is that King Ravana used this cave to hide Princess Sita. If you are interested in the Sri Lankan history, and you’re ready to climb some stairs to see this cave, then you must check out the Ravana Cave.

Tales say that King Rama of India had a beautiful wife, Queen Sita. He kidnapped Queen Sita, brought her to Sri Lanka, and hid her in the Ravana caves. The tunnels served as a quick means of transportation through the hills and as a secret passage. They connect with all the important cities, airports, and dairy farms in Sri Lanka. A closer look at these tunnels indicates that they are man-made and not just natural formations. The architectural details of these tunnels prove the brilliant way of building of King Ravana. The Ravana cave consists of a part of the tunnel that is connected to the Ravana Falls in Ella and involves a moderately steep climb of over 500 steps through forested terrain. Though small and narrow in its accessible section, the cave is thought to be part of a larger tunnel network used in ancient times for strategic movements through the hills. In addition to its mythological significance, Ravana Cave offers panoramic views of Ella’s lush landscapes and is a popular stop for those interested in both history and adventure. The combination of legend, natural beauty, and light trekking makes it a rewarding and culturally rich experience for visitors.

Ravana Falls

A beautiful and powerful waterfall located just a few kilometers from the town. It’s associated with the legend of King Ravana from the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. This waterfall measures approximately 25 m (82 ft) in height and cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an area flower with withering petals. But this is not the case in the dry season, where the flow of water reduces dramatically.

The falls have been named after the legendary king Ravana, which is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to legend, it is said that Ravana (who was the king of Sri Lanka at the time) had kidnapped princess Sita and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave. The reason for the kidnapping is said to be a revenge for slicing off the nose of his sister by Rama (husband of Sita) and his brother Lax          mana. At the time, the cave was surrounded by thick forests in the midst of wilderness. It is also believed that Rama’s queen bathed in a pool that accumulated the water falling from this waterfall. They believed that Ravana has played Ravanahatha over here.

Nine Arches Bridge

Nine Arches Bridge is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country. The construction of the bridge was generally attributed to P. K. Appuhamy, a local Ceylonese builder, on the advice of British engineers. Also known as the “Bridge in the Sky,” this iconic colonial-era railway bridge is a marvel of engineering and one of the most photographed landmarks in Sri Lanka. Watching a train pass over the bridge is a must-see experience. Built at 3100m above sea level, among the craggy peaks of the Central Highlands, the Nine Arches forms a viaduct between the Demodara and Ella Railway stations. Built entirely out of brick, rock, and cement, without a single piece of steel, the bridge has stood solid since 1921, its time of creation. According to history, the bridge was built by the locals using such materials when the construction came to a standstill from the lack of steel caused by World War I. But, in addition to this history, lore abounds about the creation of the bridge.

The fact remains that the Nine Arches Bridge, with its nine graceful arches and solid construction, is one of the proofs of Sri Lanka’s skills in.

Little Adam’s Peak

Little Adam’s Peak is a popular and accessible hiking destination located near the town of Ella in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Rising about 1,141 meters above sea level, this peak offers a relatively easy trek through lush tea plantations, bamboo groves, and scenic forests, making it suitable for hikers of all levels. The trail is well-marked and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours round-trip, rewarding visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, mountains, and distant waterfalls. Named for its resemblance to the famous Adam’s Peak, Little Adam’s Peak is especially beautiful during sunrise or sunset when the golden light enhances the vibrant landscape. Its popularity stems from the combination of natural beauty, serenity, and the chance to experience Sri Lanka’s picturesque hill country without a strenuous climb.
